Sharyn Alexander is a geologist and mining executive with over 20 years of experience across mineral exploration and mining, from early-stage discovery to near-mine development. Her career has taken her from diamond exploration in northern Canada to gold mines in Australia, and into senior leadership roles with junior exploration companies.

Sharyn has held executive leadership, director, and advisory roles with multiple public and private companies, with past roles at B2Gold, Barrick, and SRK Consulting. She previously led Sun Summit Minerals through some of the toughest years of the junior mining market and currently serves on the board of the BC Association for Mineral Exploration (AME).

In her Ground Truth column, Sharyn brings a geologist’s perspective to the stories investors care about most-breaking down drill results, geology, and exploration strategy to focus on risk, scale, and value creation. Jeff Valks’ passion for investing started while working as a radio update anchor for Canada’s preeminent sports station, TSN in 2011. Late one Friday night, he muted his mic after his last update of the evening, when it occurred to him that if he focused on stock markets as much as he focused on sports statistics the results were more likely to benefit his future.

Studying capital markets was an instant love affair for Jeff. While his friends partied on weekends, he was knee-deep in research. In 2012 he began making his own trades, catching the likes of Tesla and Facebook at a time when analysts were bearish about the future juggernauts.
